Laser Wrinkle Removal

Synonyms - laser skin resurfacing, CO2 laser resurfacing, laser facelift

Facial wrinkles are the result of time, sun exposure, heredity, expressive muscle action and ravity. Smoking is a contributing factor as well. Fine lines are usually first noted, with dismay, around the eyes ('crow's feet) and upper lip. The lip creases look like 'smoker's lines' and cause lipstick 'bleeding'. The same factors create irregular skin texture and colour.

Are you a candidate for this procedure?
Patients with crepy (crepe-like texture) facial wrinkles and purse-string lines around the mouth at rest see the most improvement with CO2 resurfacing. Skin can be tightened by as much as 20%. Irregular skin texture and discolouration are greatly improved as well. Chicken pox and saucer-shaped (not 'ice-pick') scars also respond.

Who is not a candidate?

Very deep olive or darker skin types are at risk of developing undesirable pigment changes.

How is the procedure done?

Dr. Lozinski uses an Ultrapulse 5000 laser, which is the most advanced carbon dioxide laser technology available. It uses high-energy beams of light to precisely vaporize or 'paint away' lines, wrinkles and other skin defects. The procedure is performed here in our private clinic, without the costs and risks of hospitalization. Eyelifts (blepharoplasty)

Some patients would benefit from additional laser surgical correction of lower eyelid 'bags' and excess upper eyelid skin, which we also offer at Aestheticare.

What type of anesthetic is used?

Resurfacing can be done under only local anesthetic together with Ativan (in the Valium Family).

What is the recovery period?

We recommend 2 weeks to recuperate. A special dressing is worn for the first week. The new, smooth skin is too pink for camouflage to cover easily until day 14 postop. The camouflage phase usually lasts 3 months. It is essential that sun exposure be avoided for the first 3 months (summer surgery is still an option as long as potent, broad spectrum sunscreen and a hat are utilized).

How does Laser Resurfacing compare to a face lift?

Laser resurfacing has the advantage of overall skin tightening in all directions, whereas facelifting pulls in only one (lateral) direction. Laser resurfacing requires no cutting and therefore avoids potential scarring (when performed by an experienced laser specialist).
